- People & Culture
Bayer Thai Co., Ltd., in collaboration with Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital, under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Medical Department, organized a seminar entitled "Check Before the Shocking ( Chocolate Cyst): Lower Abdominal Pain is Not a Minor Issue" at the Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital activity hall in March 2025. March of each year is designated as Endometriosis Awareness Month.
This seminar is part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed last year between Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and Bayer Thai Co., Ltd., commemorating His Majesty the King's 72nd birthday (6th cycle). It aims to raise awareness among Thais about the importance of healthcare and to sustainably improve the quality of life for the population, particularly regarding endometriosis. The seminar seeks to educate women about the importance of their health and encourage them to consult specialists for timely diagnosis and treatment.
This seminar was honored with opening remarks by Dr. Porntep Saeheng, Director of Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Paniya Sutabutr, Medical Director of Bayer Thai Co., Ltd. Distinguished speakers included Assoc . Prof. Dr. Savitree Suvikrom, Head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Piyathida Thongrong, Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital.
Endometriosis is caused by menstrual blood flowing backward into the abdominal cavity. This menstrual blood contains endometrial cells, which can grow and form scar tissue, such as accumulating in the ovaries to form dark, chocolate-like lumps, hence the term 'chocolate cyst' or 'chocolate cyst'.
A Silent Threat Women Should Watch Out For:
Warning signs of endometriosis include:
- More severe menstrual cramps than usual, worsening with menstruation and progressively increasing in severity in subsequent cycles;
- Pain during or after intercourse, characterized by deep, persistent pain;
- Pelvic pain, occurring even when not menstruating; and
- Infertility, as this condition often leads to pelvic adhesions, sometimes causing blockage of both fallopian tubes, making natural conception impossible.
Menstrual cramps are a significant source of distress for women, not only reducing their quality of life but also impacting work, studies, and even causing them to miss out on desired activities.
Therefore, if you experience any of these symptoms, you are at risk and should consult a gynecologist and undergo diagnosis. Don't worry about the diagnostic process, as endometriosis can be diagnosed through various methods, from taking a medical history and performing a physical examination and pelvic examination to ultrasound to assess the size and location of the cyst.
Treatment methods
are crucial, and early diagnosis leads to early treatment. Currently, there are three main treatment approaches for endometriosis (chocolate cysts): 1) medication, 2) surgery, and 3) a combination of medication and surgery.
There is currently no way to prevent this disease. Therefore, if you suspect any symptoms, you should consult a gynecologist for diagnosis and treatment. Even after surgery, there is a chance of recurrence, so the doctor will plan long-term treatments to prevent recurrence.
