Our Commitment to Sustainability
Our steps to be even more sustainable across our businesses
Our Commitments and Targets
We are also working to reach carbon neutrality by 2030 and to have net-zero waste across our entire value chain by 2050 by embracing renewable energy in our operations and investing heavily in technology and products that lead to more climate friendly outcomes. The health of our planet and our people are deeply connected, and while Bayer sits at the intersection of both we will not sit on the sidelines.
Our steps to be even more sustainable across our businesses
Agriculture
Regenerative agriculture and farmer support
Our Crop Science division is working to make farms more sustainable and farmers more successful.
The future of farming is being shaped by today’s innovations. Bayer is developing new technologies—including digital farming, precision agriculture and plant breeding tools—that will minimize agriculture’s ecological footprint, while empowering growers to help address poverty and hunger. Together, these efforts will improve health and spur economic development.
- Scaling regenerative agriculture by creating an outcome-based production model which has improving soil health at its core and strengthening resilience as a key objective. Other principal aims include mitigating climate change, maintaining or restoring biodiversity, conserving water as well as increasing yields and improving the economic and social well-being of farmers and their communities.
- Advancing a carbon-zero future for agriculture by reducing the field greenhouse gas footprint by 30% of the most emitting crop systems in the regions Bayer serves. We’re committed to helping farmers in the U.S. make their own operations more climate-resilient while generating additional revenue.
- Producing higher-yielding crops with less impact in and around the farm by reducing the environmental impact of crop protection by 30%. We’re developing short stature corn that stands shorter and sturdier in the field, which is more resistant to the impacts of severe weather changes.
- We are working with Microsoft to build digital farming tools and innovating technology such as our Climate FieldView, a digital agriculture platform that harnesses data to reduce the amount of water, crop protection and other resources needed to grow a healthy crop.
Consumer Health
Packaging, access, and inclusive products
Our Consumer Health teams are helping people live healthier lives. This means expanding access to everyday health in underserved communities and changing how our products are made and consumed to help protect our planet.
Nearly half the world’s population lacks access to basic, essential health services. Bayer is working to address this through several programs and partnerships.
- We are working with The Nutrient Gap Initiative to provide access to vitamins and minerals in underserved communities. Together, we have a goal of reaching 50 million people per year by 2030. In 2021 alone, we were able to reach 20 million people around the world. As a part of this initiative, Bayer is working with Vitamin Angels to help pregnant women and their babies gain access to prenatal supplements. To date, we have reached 4 million underserved pregnant women and infants worldwide.
We are also transforming 100% of our Consumer Health packaging, making it recyclable or reusable by 2030, while simultaneously investing in sustainably sourced materials and packaging.
Pharmaceuticals
Sustainable manufacturing and healthcare access
Our Pharmaceuticals teams are working to build stronger healthcare systems, while making our products and facilities more sustainable as well. With manufacturing facilities in Berkeley, CA and Pittsburgh, PA our operations have a direct impact on the communities around us.
- Bayer is exploring and implementing new ways to continue our industry-leading research and quality product development and production work, while using fewer resources and creating less waste.
- We’re using sustainable technology and fewer resources in our manufacturing. We’re doing things like switching from stainless steel equipment to single-use technologies, saving energy, water, and chemicals.
- We are also partnering with surrounding communities to drive shared economic and ecological value.
- Bayer is working to ensure access to health services, especially for women across the U.S. who face growing threats to their health and choices for family planning.
- Bayer launched We’re For Her, an initiative designed to provide access to family planning resources and educational programs that protect the availability and affordability of contraceptives.
